Advancing Subsurface Knowledge

In 2011 Royal Dutch Shell plc gave E&P editors unparalleled access to its chief scientists and research partners for a supplement that would highlight its efforts in advancing subsurface understanding. The result was Advancing Subsurface Knowledge, which contains information gathered from nearly 30 private interviews with Shell employees, academicians, R&D consortia leaders, and major service companies. The chief scientists of Shell all answered a simple question: “What problems would you like to solve?” The scientists noted a need for less expensive offshore seismic surveys, rock characterization techniques that are applicable in shale reservoirs, better methods of interpreting data from unconventional reservoirs, and better reservoir engineering techniques to produce unconventional reservoirs. These issues and more are explained in this publication and show Shell’s desire for open innovation, resulting in research and development projects that push the boundaries of our subsurface understanding.
